Photography & Skill
What skill level is required?
You should be comfortable shooting in manual or aperture-priority mode with a working understanding of exposure, composition, and light. You don't need professional experience — but you should be past figuring out your camera. This expedition is for photographers ready to focus entirely on the work, not the technical basics.
What gear should I bring?
Any system you're fully comfortable with. Eric shoots Sony mirrorless but this is not a brand-sponsored trip. A versatile zoom (24–70mm equivalent) and a fast prime (35mm or 50mm equivalent) will cover most situations. A second body is worth considering. Bring more memory cards than you think you need and a solid backup drive. A full packing list is provided upon booking.
What's the balance between structured time and free shooting?
Roughly 70% structured, 30% intentional free time. Mornings typically involve guided visits to major sites with Eric shooting alongside you and offering real-time feedback. Afternoons and evenings often provide free shooting time in markets, streets, and neighborhoods — with Eric's specific recommendations on where to go and how to approach it.
Will there be portfolio reviews and feedback?
Yes — this is central to the experience. Most evenings include a group edit and review session where photographers share their strongest frames from the day. Eric gives direct, honest feedback focused on story and intent rather than just technical execution. These sessions are consistently the most valuable part of the trip for participants.
Is this trip suitable for someone transitioning from hobbyist to serious photographer?
Yes — if you're genuinely committed to making that transition. Many participants come at exactly this inflection point. What matters is that you arrive with intention and openness to feedback. The structure and mentorship are specifically designed to accelerate your development as a documentary photographer.

The Trip & Logistics
Is Egypt safe for photographers?
Egypt is a safe and well-traveled destination. The major sites are managed and visited by international travelers year-round. We always travel with experienced local guides, avoid any areas with travel advisories, and approach photographing people with the cultural sensitivity that's central to our entire philosophy. Eric has worked in Egypt multiple times and has established relationships on the ground.
How large are the groups?
Maximum 12 photographers per expedition — a firm cap, not a target. We sometimes run with as few as 6–8 participants. Smaller groups move differently: quieter, less conspicuous, more able to wait for the right moment without disrupting it. Group size is always confirmed before your final payment is due.
What's the physical demand level?
Moderate to high. You'll be on your feet 4–8 hours daily, often in heat exceeding 90°F, carrying camera equipment across uneven terrain at ancient sites. You don't need to be an athlete, but you should be in reasonable physical condition and able to walk significant distances comfortably. Rest periods are built into every day.
What's included in the price?
Hotels, domestic flights, all meals as listed in the itinerary, ground transportation in AC private vehicles, all site entrance fees, an expert Egyptologist guide throughout, and Eric's full leadership and mentorship. Not included: international flights, Egypt entry visa (~$25 USD), alcoholic and soft drinks, gratuities, personal expenses, optional activities, and travel insurance (required).
What's the difference between Standard and Luxury tiers?
Identical itinerary, identical photography experience, identical group. The difference is hotels and cruise vessel. Standard uses excellent 4–5 star accommodations including Steigenberger properties. Luxury upgrades to premium 5-star throughout and a higher-tier Nile cruise ship. If comfort matters significantly to your overall experience, Luxury is worth the difference. If you'd rather put that money toward your next trip, Standard is genuinely excellent.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — travel insurance is required for all participants. At minimum your policy should cover trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and emergency medical care. We also recommend a policy that covers camera equipment. We're happy to suggest providers upon booking.
Payment & Booking
Is there a payment plan available?
Yes. A 50% deposit secures your spot upon application approval. The remaining balance is due 90 days before departure. Monthly payment arrangements can be discussed on a case-by-case basis — reach out directly and we'll work something out that makes sense for your situation.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations more than 90 days before departure: deposit refunded minus a $250 processing fee. Cancellations 60–90 days out: 50% of total trip cost retained. Cancellations under 60 days: no refund. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation. If we cancel the expedition for any reason, you receive a full refund.
How do I apply?
Fill out the application on the Reserve page with a brief introduction, a link to your photography work, and which pricing tier interests you. Eric personally reviews all applications and responds within 5–7 business days. If accepted, a 50% deposit confirms your spot. You're not committing to anything by applying — it's a conversation starter.
How many spots are left for Egypt 2026?
The group is capped at 12 and fills on a rolling basis as applications are approved. We don't publicly post remaining spots, but if you're interested, apply sooner rather than later — the Egypt expeditions have historically filled 3–4 months before departure.
