Egypt 2026 · Documentary Photography Expedition

Egypt is not a destination.
It's an awakening.

Ten days. Cairo, Luxor, the Nile, Abu Simbel. Led by Eric Berry — documentary photographer, CNN contributor — on his first-ever public expedition. Two departures. 24 spots total.

Ten days in one of the world's
most extraordinary civilizations.

Egypt rewards the photographer who slows down. The ones who walk streets that tourists skip, who return to the same corner three mornings in a row, who earn the frame instead of grabbing it.

This expedition is built around that philosophy. Eric Berry has spent a decade learning how to be present in places that resist it. In November 2026 he's doing it for the first time with a group — and he's keeping it small enough that it still feels like the real thing.

Cairo. The Nile. Luxor. Abu Simbel. Ten days that will change how you see and how you shoot.

"Egypt doesn't let you stay on the surface. Neither does documentary photography. That's why they belong together."

Day by Day

10 Days. Five Worlds.

Every day is built around documentary photography — structure in the morning, freedom in the afternoon, portfolio reviews in the evening. The itinerary is the same for both Standard and Luxury departures.

01
Cairo

Arrival & Orientation

Land, settle, and take your first long walk. Cairo rewards the photographer who arrives without a plan. Meet your group and Egyptologist guide at the welcome briefing at dusk.

02
Cairo Region

Saqqara & Dahshur — The First Pyramids

Before Giza, there was Saqqara. The Step Pyramid of Djoser — the world's oldest stone monument — sits in a complex most visitors skip entirely. We don't. Then the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur. Fewer crowds, deeper history, more time to work.

03
Giza

Giza Plateau & The Grand Egyptian Museum

The Great Pyramids. The Sphinx. The GEM — the largest archaeological museum in the world. The challenge Eric sets: find the image that hasn't been taken a thousand times. The people around the monuments are as interesting as the monuments themselves.

04
Luxor

Flight South — Temple of Hathor at Dendera

Early flight south to Luxor, then a drive to Dendera. The astronomical ceiling of the Temple of Hathor maps the ancient Egyptian cosmos in painted relief. It makes you feel genuinely small. Afternoon free time in Luxor to explore independently.

Luxor West Bank · Nile

Valley of the Kings — Board the Nile Cruise

Three royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The painted walls. The weight of death and ceremony. Then board the Nile Cruise — your floating base for four nights. Evening visit to Luxor Temple illuminated at dusk.

Luxor · Nile

Karnak Temple & Nile Sailing

Optional sunrise hot air balloon over the West Bank. Then Karnak — the largest religious complex ever built by human hands. A forest of hypostyle columns unlike anything else on earth. Afternoon: sailing south, editing on deck with Eric.

07
Edfu · Kom Ombo

Temples on the River

Horse-drawn carriage to the Temple of Horus at Edfu — the best-preserved temple in Egypt. Then south to Kom Ombo: a double temple built for two gods simultaneously, with a crocodile museum that is exactly as strange as it sounds.

08
Abu Simbel · Aswan

Abu Simbel & The Nubian Village

4-hour overland drive to Abu Simbel — the twin temples of Ramesses II carved into a cliff face. At sunrise with no crowds, these are among the most powerful photographs you will ever make. Afternoon: a Nubian village on Lake Nasser.

09
Aswan

Aswan — Obelisk, Philae & Farewell

The Unfinished Obelisk — 137 feet of granite abandoned mid-carving 3,500 years ago. Then Philae Temple at dusk. Final group portfolio review — your best images from ten days, discussed honestly. Farewell dinner together.
